Information of interest about Kuala Lumpur

Quick facts

Language: Malay (Bahasa Malaysia) is the official language. English is widely spoken and commonly used in business, hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas.

Time: Malaysia Time (MYT), UTC/GMT +8

Money: Malaysian Ringgit (MYR).

  • Credit and debit cards are widely accepted at hotels, shopping malls, restaurants, and most retail establishments.
  • Foreign currencies can be exchanged at banks, licensed money changers, and major shopping centres. ATMs are widely available throughout Kuala Lumpur.
  • It is advisable to carry some cash for purchases at local markets, street food stalls, small shops, and certain transportation services.

Tax: Malaysia applies a Sales and Service Tax (SST) instead of a Value Added Tax (VAT).
Hotels may also charge a Tourism Tax of RM10.00 per room, per night for eligible foreign passport holders, as well as applicable service charges and taxes.

Temperature: Kuala Lumpur enjoys a tropical rainforest climate, with warm temperatures and high humidity throughout the year. Daytime temperatures typically range between 28°C and 33°C (82°F to 91°F), with occasional afternoon showers. Lightweight clothing is recommended, while a light jacket or sweater may be useful in air-conditioned venues such as hotels and conference facilities.

Religion: Malaysia is a multicultural and multi-religious country. Islam is the official religion and is practiced by the majority of the population. Other major religions include Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, and Sikhism, reflecting the country's rich cultural diversity. Visitors will find a wide variety of mosques, temples, churches, and other places of worship throughout Kuala Lumpur, where different faiths coexist harmoniously.

Dress code

Conference: Business

  • For men: Tie and jacket required
  • For women: Suits, pants, jackets, skirts and dresses for a business environment.

Gala Dinner: Smart casual
No sleeveless shirt or blouse, no short trousers and no slippers.

Because of heat and high humidity.

Manners and Etiquette

  • Greetings: A handshake is the most common form of greeting in business and social settings, although some Malays, particularly Muslim women, may prefer not to shake hands with members of the opposite sex. In such cases, a friendly smile and a slight nod are considered polite and respectful.
  • Be Respectful: Malaysians are known for their warmth and hospitality. Politeness, patience, and courtesy are highly valued, so greeting people with a smile and treating others with respect will always be appreciated.
  • Dress Modestly: While Kuala Lumpur is a modern and cosmopolitan city, modest attire is recommended when visiting religious sites such as mosques and temples. Visitors may also be asked to remove their shoes before entering places of worship.
  • Respect Local Customs: Public displays of anger or confrontation are generally discouraged. Remaining calm and courteous during interactions is considered good etiquette.

Tipping: Tipping is not mandatory in Malaysia, but it is always appreciated for good service.

  • Many hotels and restaurants automatically include a 10% service charge (and any applicable taxes) in the bill.
  • If no service charge is included, leaving a tip of around 5% to 10% for exceptional service is a thoughtful gesture.

  • Be mindful of your belongings in crowded areas such as markets, shopping malls, public transport, and popular tourist attractions to avoid pickpocketing.
  • When paying by credit or debit card, ensure your card remains within your sight whenever possible.
  • Malaysia drives on the left-hand side of the road. Always use designated pedestrian crossings or overhead walkways where available, and look both ways before crossing, as traffic can be busy in the city centre.
  • When using taxis, choose licensed operators or trusted ride-hailing services such as Grab for added convenience and security.
