JUNE 2021
THE COOPERATIVE’S
2ND VIRTUAL MEETING
9th-10th NOVEMBER 2021 - TWO CONSECUTIVE DAYS OF CONFERENCING TO MOVE YOUR BUSINESS AHEAD!
Message from the President
Dear members,
Welcome to the June edition of The Coop’s quarterly newsletters. I hope this newsletter finds all of you in good health and spirits. I would like to start by thanking all of those members who have contributed to this newsletter with their news updates. In spite of the challenges posed by the pandemic, we have to carry on with our businesses as usual and the best way to grow your business is by partnering with reliable logistical partners to exchange projects and gain new ones.
This year the ongoing pandemic will not allow us to have an in-person meeting like we used to do before 2020. However, we have arranged for a Virtual Meeting for Coop members for the second time, the details of which can be found inside the newsletter. Make sure to be there on 9th and 10th of November for 2 consecutive days of online networking with your partners.
Like always you will find all the news from your network members in the last three months and relevant news and news bits from the logistics industry. Additionally, there is a two-part interview with a Coop member from Washington DC which is packed with interesting information and makes for a very engaging and amusing read. There is also an interview with The Coop’s Agent Coordinator Isabel Magdaleno who talks about the network, her experiences with us and offers a few useful tips for the agents. The electronic bill of landing has become a much talked about topic in our sector which is why we have included a short post where we talked about its possible advantages. I would like to end by hoping that all of you are trying your best to share a portion of your shipments for greater collaboration within the network. Do not forget that in these tough times it is the spirit of cooperation that will allow us to flourish in this industry.
Happy reading!
Kind regards,
Antonio Torres President and Founder

MEMBER INTERVIEW
"We are local and home grown but our focus has been national and global. We’ve pursued the more esoteric, challenging and highly regulated commodities: We’ve moved satellites to their launch sites, high-explosive charges to mining/drilling sites, prototype automobiles to secret sites for photo-shoots, among others."

SPECIAL
The Coronavirus has forever changed the mode of operations in this industry. We are witnessing an increased digital trend with even small and mid-sized logistics companies making substantial investments towards automation of several day-to-day processes. The adoption of the electronic bill of lading by several countries is one such change that has taken place in the transportation and logistics industry. Electronic bill of ladings, the legal equivalent of a paper bill of lading, has become a very popular option among shipping companies. Elimination of the paperwork has made the process easier with a streamlined workflow for all the concerned parties.
Zero Paperwork
One of the major benefits of technology in
business processes is the amount of time it helps
to save. Therefore, the primary advantage of eBOL
is the acceleration of operations, minimization
of paperwork, and simplified work processes. No
matter if you are a freight forwarder, exporter,
or importer, the eBOLs will allow you the option
of immediate and authenticated transfer of your
original bill of lading document. The only difference
is that the paper documents are now digital and
they are transferred via p2p blockchain technology
instead of by courier. In other words, the transfer
of documents is reliant on cloud-based technology.
Make use of other modes of transport
However, do not disregard the option of rail and
trucks. Rail freight is one of the most dependable
modes of transportation and you can move your
shipment without having to wait for months for an
empty container.
Enhanced speed and security
The elimination of physical paper documents
means that your bill is never going to get
misplaced, lost, damaged, duplicated, or
destroyed. Additionally, the eBOLs also allow you
to save significant costs which are otherwise spent
on courier charges. Moreover, it saves a lot of your
time by reducing the transfer time of these docs
from weeks to less than a few minutes.
Ensures business continuity
Losing or damaging a bill of lading can be
absolutely disastrous for the freight forwarder
since it can cause long delays and disruption of
the shipment. However, when the document is
electronic, you can easily replace it by accessing
the cloud or blockchain network. This allows you to
save a lot of time and headache and carry on with
the trade seamlessly.
It is widely believed that the wide-scale
implementation of the electronic bill of lading
will be a game-changer in the transportation
and logistics industry. It will result will in quicker
and more efficient transactions, cost-cutting,
risk elimination, and more security. According to
CMA CGM, they will come with the same level of
insurance coverage as the paper BOLs.
However, there is still the issue of safety and
acceptability. Since many countries are still
not ready for the use of eBOLs. For example,
in England, it is still not recognized as a viable
document. In conclusion, we can say that it will still
take some time for the global shipping industry to
implement a uniform system of electronic bill of
lading but the process has already begun and we
are heading towards that path.
LOGISTICS NEWS
This warehousing automation partnership which started back in 2017 is an important step towards implementing DHL’s digital strategy.
DHL- the German supply chain multinational has recently announced a framework agreement that will expand its collaboration with mobile robot manufacturer Locus Robotics. DHL’s initial investment towards robotics technology helped to improve their operational efficiency and now they are going to make use of 2000 assisted picking robots by the end of this year.
